Not surprisingly, I'm having a great time. Going to hear FANTASTIC music every night...(All pics are enlargeable with a click.) Tomorrow: My residency at STEIM begins. I'm stoked.

SoCal and The Desert...

I had an excellent driving day throughout SoCal on Friday with Leah Bowden. We performed and presented at CalArts for Wadada Leo Smith's composer/performer colloquium...after having coffee/breakfast with Andrew Pask. We then proceeded to Ventura, Santa Monica and back to SD...AND I forgot my camera for that trip, of course.

Followed it up with a great day in the desert, throughout Anza Borrego, Salton Sea....excellent springtime day trip with Phil Skaller. And I remembered my camera.

Colin Woodford Recording Session

In the early stages of a horrible flu and fever (still going) I had a *wonderful* Thursday evening recording Colin Woodford playing solo cymbal. Thankfully, my friend Joachim Goßmann was there to prevent me from making any fever-induced-hallucination-based mistakes. The recording turned out fantastic.

For you technology-interested folks, here are the details. We used a pair of DPA 4006-TL omni microphones and a pair of Josephson C42 cardioid microphones going into Grace pre-amps. I probably will only use the DPAs, they sound amazing. You can see how we set them up, the stereo field of the cymbal is quite stunning. It was recorded at the University of California San Diego ICAM Studios into a Pro Tools HD system recording at 96/24.

Solo Session 2

Solo Session this weekend

Once again I’m stoked to be at Studio A at UCSD. This time it is to record a solo album this weekend. Setup was today, headed up by engineer Joe Kucera and grad student engineers Scott Worthington and Clint Davis.

This will be an all acoustic session. We have two “areas” set up, one for micro-sounds and one for full-on playing. The microphones are wonderful, for the micro-sound area we have a Schoeps CMC 5 mic amp with a sub-cardioid capsule and a B&K 4006 (omni), both running into an Avalon M2.

For the full-on area we have a Coles 4038 ribbon mic, a Royer SF-12 stereo ribbon mic, and two Sennheiser MKH 40's, all running into a Millennia HV-3R.

The session will be recording into Pro Tools at 96/24.

This should be a fun weekend.
